Iron Explained Like You Are 5

Look up at the night sky. Stars look like tiny glowing dots. They are actually giant cooking pots. They make the stuff inside you.

A very long time ago, there was only space. Then giant stars started to burn. They cooked simple things together. They made something totally new.

The stars cooked a very special metal. It is called iron. Iron is very heavy and very strong. The stars became full of iron.

The stars ate too much iron. They got too heavy to stay together. The giant stars exploded with a boom. This is called a supernova.

The explosion threw iron across space. Iron dust floated everywhere. It looked like a giant sparkly cloud. It floated for a long time.

The dust started to clump together. It made big rocks. The rocks crashed into each other. They made our home called Earth.

Most of the iron sank down deep. It sank to the very middle of Earth. It made a giant metal ball. This ball is still there today.

Some iron stayed near the top. It mixed with ordinary dirt. It hid inside rocks. The iron went to sleep for a long time.

Early humans walked on the Earth. They used stones to make tools. Stone tools broke very easily. People needed something much stronger.

Sometimes rocks fell from the sky. We call them meteorites. They landed with a loud crash. People found these special sky rocks.

Sky rocks were heavy and cold. People hit them with other stones. The sky rocks did not break. They bent into new shapes instead.

This was the very first iron. It was a gift from space. People made special shiny knives. Only kings could own sky iron.

Sky iron was very rare. People wanted more strong metal. They saw red rocks in the dirt. They wondered what was inside.

The red rocks held sleeping iron. People tried to melt the red rocks. They put them in campfires. The fires were not hot enough.

People learned to melt copper first. Copper was much easier to melt. They mixed it to make bronze. Bronze was good but not perfect.

Bronze weapons bent in big fights. People still wanted the sleeping iron. They needed to wake it up. They needed a much hotter fire.

Blacksmiths made a special oven. They called it a bloomery. They packed it with red dirt. They added lots of black charcoal.

They pumped air into the fire. The fire roared like a monster. It got hotter than lava. The red rocks finally started to melt.

A dirty lump fell to the bottom. It looked like an ugly sponge. It was full of melted rock. But it also held pure iron.

The blacksmith took the hot sponge. He hit it with a heavy hammer. Sparks flew everywhere like fireworks. The bad dirt fell away.

A solid block of iron remained. It was harder than any stone. It was tougher than bronze. The iron was finally awake.

This changed the whole world. We call it the Iron Age. Everyone wanted iron tools. The stone tools were thrown away.

Farmers used iron to plow dirt. The iron sliced right through roots. They could plant more food. More food meant bigger families.

Villages grew into big cities. Cities needed tall walls to stay safe. Workers cut stone with iron tools. The walls grew very high.

Armies wanted iron for themselves. They made iron swords and shields. Iron broke right through bronze. The strongest iron won the battles.

Kings built huge empires with iron. They conquered lands far away. They made iron nails for boats. The boats sailed across oceans.

People learned a new trick. They mixed iron with invisible carbon. The fire made it super strong. This new metal is called steel.

Steel is the best kind of iron. It does not bend easily. It does not break in the cold. It changed how we build things.

We used steel to build tracks. Giant steam trains rolled on the tracks. They carried heavy loads across countries. The world got much smaller.

We built ships out of steel. Wood ships could not cross ice. Steel ships pushed through anything. They carried food across the world.

We made long wires out of steel. We hung them high in the air. The wires carried electricity everywhere. They lit up the dark nights.

Cities wanted to build taller houses. Brick houses fall over if too tall. We put steel bones inside walls. The buildings touched the sky.

We call them skyscrapers today. Without iron they would fall down. Iron is the hidden skeleton. It holds up the modern world.

Iron does even more amazing things. Remember the iron deep inside Earth? The giant metal ball spins around. It acts like a giant magnet.

The magnet makes an invisible shield. It wraps around the whole Earth. It stops bad rays from the sun. The shield keeps us totally safe.

You can see this shield sometimes. Go to the cold north poles. The shield glows green and purple. We call it the northern lights.

The magnet helps animals travel too. Birds use it to fly south. Turtles use it to cross oceans. Iron helps them find their way.

We use the iron magnet too. We made tiny compasses to hold. The needle always points to the north. It keeps sailors from getting lost.

Iron is not just in rocks. Iron is hiding inside your house. It is in the pots you use. It helps cook your yummy dinner.

Iron hides in the soil outside. Green plants drink it from the dirt. The iron helps plants grow tall. It keeps their leaves very green.

You also have iron inside you. It is the most important secret. Without iron you could not run. Without iron you could not play.

Breathe in a big gulp of air. The air goes into your lungs. Your body needs to move that air. Iron does the heavy lifting.

Iron lives inside your red blood. It grabs the oxygen from your breath. It carries the air to your toes. It gives you lots of energy.

Iron is what makes blood red. If you cut your finger it bleeds. You can taste the iron metal. It tastes just like a penny.

You need to eat iron everyday. You get it from eating green spinach. You get it from eating red meat. Food keeps your blood very strong.

If you forget to eat iron you get tired. Your body runs out of breath quickly. You feel sleepy all the time. Your inner fire gets very weak.

Even tiny bugs need iron to live. Fish swimming in the sea need it. Every living thing shares this secret. We all run on star metal.

Scientists are still learning about iron. They send robots to the red planet. Mars is red because of iron dust. It is covered in iron rust.

We want to build houses on Mars. We will need to use its iron. We will make steel on another world. The story of iron will continue.

Iron is hard but it can break. Water and air make iron sick. It turns orange and flaky. We call this sickness rust.

We have to paint iron to protect it. Paint stops the water and air. If we take care of iron it lasts. It will stand for many lifetimes.

We can melt old iron down again. A broken car can become a new bike. Iron never truly goes away. It just takes a new shape.

From the sky rocks to the skyscrapers. Iron has always been our helper. It gave us the tools to grow. It built the world you know.

Look at a tall building today. Think about the stars long ago. The same stuff connects them both. We live on an iron planet.

Iron is the silent strength of the universe. It holds up our biggest cities and carries the breath in our blood. It is the star dust that built our world.
