Salt Explained Like You Are 5

Everything in the world is made of tiny building blocks. We call these tiny blocks atoms. Two very different atoms float in the universe. One is a very soft metal. The other is a green gas.

These two atoms are dangerous when they are alone. The soft metal burns wildly in water. The green gas is very poisonous. But they really want to be together. They crash into each other fast.

A magic change happens when they finally crash. They lock together very tightly. They lose all their dangerous powers. They become a safe white crystal. We call this clear crystal salt.

This white crystal is incredibly special. It dissolves perfectly in simple water. Our young Earth had lots of water. Big rains washed the hard rocks for millions of years.

The heavy rain carried the tiny salt crystals away. It flowed down deep fast rivers. The rivers emptied into the giant empty oceans. The oceans slowly filled with the salt.

Life started deep in these salty ocean waters. Tiny bugs swam in the cool water. Little fishes grew and learned to swim quickly. They needed the ocean salt to live.

Then some brave animals crawled onto the dry land. They left the salty ocean far behind. But they still needed salt to survive. They carried the ocean inside them.

Our bodies are just like walking oceans. We have salty water splashing inside us. Our sad tears taste like the sea. Our hot sweat tastes very salty too.

Salt does a very important job inside you. It acts like a tiny traffic cop. It helps water move around your whole body. It keeps your cells happy and perfectly plump.

Your busy brain talks to your working muscles. It uses tiny electric sparks to talk. Salt helps make these bright sparks travel fast. Without salt, you cannot move your arm.

Your body loses precious salt every single day. You sweat it out when you play hard. You cry it out when you feel sad. You must eat more salt to replace it.

Early humans hunted wild running animals for food. Animal meat has plenty of salt inside it. Eating meat gave humans enough salt. They did not need extra salt yet.

Then humans learned a clever new trick. They learned to plant seeds in wet dirt. They grew big green fields of wheat and corn. They stopped hunting all the time.

Green plants do not have much salt inside. The new farmers ate mostly green plants. Their bodies started crying out for more salt. They felt very weak and very tired.

They had to find extra salt hiding in nature. Sometimes they found salt rocks on the dirt. Animals licked these rocks to stay perfectly healthy. Humans watched the animals and learned.

Finding salt became a very big problem. Salt was not everywhere on the dry land. Some green places had absolutely zero salt. People had to travel very far to get it.

Cold winter brought a terrible freezing danger. Food did not grow in the deep cold snow. Families went very hungry during the dark months. They needed a way to save summer food.

Fresh meat goes bad very quickly. Invisible tiny bugs eat the meat and ruin it. These bad bugs need water to survive. Salt pulls water out of everything.

People rubbed thick heavy salt onto fresh meat. The salt sucked out all the wet water. The invisible bugs died of sudden thirst. The meat stayed completely safe to eat all winter.

This amazing discovery changed the whole entire world. People could store good food for many years. They could travel on long wooden ships. They did not starve in the winter anymore.

Now everyone desperately needed big piles of salt. But getting salt was very hard work. People went to the big ocean for help. They scooped up heavy salty sea water.

They put the sea water in big clay pots. They built huge hot fires under the pots. The hot fire boiled the water away into steam. Only the white salt stayed safely behind.

Boiling water took lots of heavy chopped wood. Men chopped down whole thick forests for the fires. It was extremely hot and sweaty work. The finished salt was very precious.

Other people found salt deep under the ground. Old oceans dried up millions of years ago. They left thick layers of salt buried very deep. People dug dark scary holes to reach it.

Men climbed down into the dark salt mines. They chopped at the hard rocks with heavy pickaxes. It was a very dangerous and scary job. Dirt tunnels sometimes collapsed on the workers.

The salt rocks were pulled up in wooden buckets. Strong horses carried the heavy buckets away. The miners worked in the black dark every day. They risked their lives for the salt.

This danger made salt incredibly valuable everywhere. It was just as rare as shiny yellow gold. Only rich powerful kings had lots of salt. Poor people carefully scraped up tiny grains.

Salt became a very real form of money. People traded bags of salt for big cows. They traded salt for nice warm clothes. Salt was wealth you could actually eat.

A powerful strong group called the Romans loved salt. They built wide flat stone roads to move salt. Their soldiers carefully guarded the precious salt wagons. The roads connected big towns together.

Roman soldiers worked very hard for their leaders. The leaders paid the soldiers with real white salt. This special salt payment was called a salarium. This is where we get the word salary.

Kings realized they could get incredibly rich from salt. They put a special tax on all white salt. Anyone buying salt had to pay the king extra. The kings grew incredibly wealthy and powerful.

Great big cities were built near open salt patches. People flocked to safe places with salt springs. Little towns grew into huge bustling noisy cities. Salt completely built our human civilization.

Look at a large map of the old world. Many city names end in very specific sounds. Old words like wich or halle mean salt. Salt named our oldest and biggest towns.

But the big salt taxes made people very angry. Poor families could not afford the king’s high tax. They could not save their meat for winter. Their hungry children cried in the cold.

People started to fight back against the greedy kings. Secret smugglers hid salt in dark hidden bags. They sneaked salt right past the king’s guards. They broke the strict law to just survive.

The angry fight over salt caused really big wars. The hungry people of France hated their salt tax. They chopped off their king’s head in anger. Salt helped start the big French Revolution.

Many long years later, India had a salt problem. Unfair British rulers controlled all the salt in India. They made it completely illegal for Indians to make salt. They charged a very high greedy tax.

A peaceful quiet man named Gandhi decided to fight. He did not use loud guns or sharp swords. He just started walking toward the big blue ocean. Thousands of brave people walked right with him.

They walked together for many very hot days. They finally reached the salty blue ocean water. Gandhi bent down and picked up salty wet mud. He made his own salt.

He broke the deeply unfair British law on purpose. Millions of Indians copied his amazingly brave action. They made salt and proudly went to dark jails. This helped India win its grand freedom.

Soon, clever smart scientists learned amazing new tricks. They invented huge powerful drilling machines. They pumped hot water deep down into the ground. The hot water melted the buried hard salt.

Giant metal pipes sucked the salty water back up. Big factories dried the water very fast. Suddenly, making lots of salt was extremely cheap. We did not need dangerous dark mines anymore.

Another incredibly big invention changed everything again completely. Someone clever invented the electric cold refrigerator. We could keep fresh meat cold in the kitchen. We did not need salt to save food.

Salt stopped being very expensive golden treasure. It became a super cheap item on every table. You can buy a giant heavy box for pennies. Kings do not ever fight over it now.

But the smart scientists found new jobs for salt. They neatly split the salt back into two atoms. They used the atoms to make hard plastic. Salt built our big modern world.

Today, you eat salt every single day. It hides quietly inside your soft bread and cheese. It makes your crunchy potato chips taste delicious. Food tastes very boring without it.

We heavily sprinkle it on icy frozen winter roads. The salt easily melts the dangerous slippery ice. It keeps driving cars from crashing in the snow. Salt definitely still saves human lives today.

But eating too much salt is a tricky thing. Our bodies really only need a tiny little pinch. Modern fast food is stuffed with extra hidden salt. We eat way too much of it safely.

Eating too much salt hurts your pumping heart. It makes your red blood push too incredibly hard. The very thing that gave us life can hurt us. We must find a very careful daily balance.

Salt is no longer a precious guarded treasure. We take the little white shaker totally for granted. We completely forget the ancient wars and dark mines. We forget the incredibly heavy human cost.

Yet the big ocean remains completely full of it. The deep dark rocks still hold giant mountains of salt. The earth has plenty of salt for everyone now. The hard dangerous struggle for salt is finally over.

Every single tear you cry shares a deep history. It shares the exact recipe of the ancient deep sea. It shares the history of the early hungry farmers. We faithfully carry human history completely inside us.

A tiny simple white crystal brought all humans together. It forced us to build very wide stone roads. It forced us to quickly trade across the oceans. It deeply pushed us to be amazingly clever.

From wildly exploding space atoms to peaceful blue oceans. From hungry cold winters to huge loud noisy cities. Salt was the completely silent boss of human history. It totally shaped everything we currently know.

Salt is the totally invisible thread connecting human civilization. It began as a simple biological need to survive. It quickly grew into our first reason to tightly unite. We completely conquered nature using salt as our tool.
