Look up at the sky. You see a giant yellow star. We call it the Sun. It gives us light.
The Sun is very hot. It is like a giant campfire in space. Earth sits near this fire.
Earth is our home. It is a big round ball. It floats in dark space.
Earth does not sit still. It spins like a toy top. This spinning makes day and night.
But Earth does another dance too. It walks in a huge circle. It walks all the way around the Sun.
This big circle is called an orbit. It is a very long path. One full circle takes a whole year.
A year is a long time. You celebrate your birthday once every year. Earth finishes one circle on your birthday.
You might think Earth gets closer to the Sun. Some people think closeness makes it hot. That is a mistake.
Earth stays a safe distance away. The circle path is mostly flat. Closeness does not make the seasons change.
The real secret is a lean. Imagine a stick poking through Earth. It goes from top to bottom.
We call this stick an axis. It is an invisible line. Earth spins around this hidden stick.
But the stick does not stand up straight. It leans to one side. It is always tipped over a little bit.
This tilt is the big magic trick. It changes everything for us. It creates the hot and cold months.
Think of a globe in a classroom. The globe is always tilted. It shows how Earth really sits in space.
Earth keeps this exact same tilt. It never wobbles back and forth. It stays tipped as it walks around the Sun.
Imagine holding a tilted ball. You walk around a lamp. The ball stays tipped the same way.
Because of the tilt, things get interesting. Sometimes the top half leans toward the Sun. We call this half the North.
When the North leans in, it gets a lot of light. The Sun shines straight down. The rays hit us directly.
Direct light is very strong. It is like a flashlight pointing right at your face. It feels very warm.
This strong light heats up the ground. It heats up the air. We feel this heat as Summer.
Summer days are very long. The Sun stays in the sky longer. You have more time to play outside.
The plants love this long light. Trees grow green leaves. Flowers open up wide.
Animals enjoy the warmth too. Bugs buzz in the air. Birds sing in the tall trees.
But remember the big circle path. Earth keeps moving along its orbit. The year moves forward.
As Earth moves, the lean stays the same. But its place near the Sun changes. The angle of light changes.
Soon, the North half does not lean in. It sits perfectly sideways to the Sun. We call this time Autumn.
The light is not totally direct. The air starts to cool down. The days get a little bit shorter.
Trees feel the cool air. Their leaves change color. The leaves turn red and fall to the ground.
Earth keeps walking its big circle. Now it reaches the other side of the Sun. This is a big change.
The North half is now leaning away. It points out into dark space. It leans away from the warm campfire.
The Sun still shines on Earth. But the light has to stretch. It hits the ground at a slant.
Slanted light is weak. It spreads out too much. It cannot warm the ground very well.
This weak light makes the air cold. You have to wear a heavy coat. We call this chilly time Winter.
Winter days are very short. The Sun goes down early. It gets dark before dinner time.
The trees rest during Winter. Their branches are bare. Many animals sleep in warm dens.
Snow might fall from the sky. The ground freezes hard. Ponds turn into slick ice.
Now think about the bottom half of Earth. We call it the South. It plays the opposite game.
When the North leans away, the South leans in. The South gets the direct light. The South feels warm.
So, when it is Winter for us, it is Summer there. People in the South go to the beach. They feel hot.
Earth is split into two teams. They take turns feeling the strong Sun. The tilt shares the warmth.
Earth never stops moving. It continues on its orbit. It leaves the cold Winter spot.
The North half stops leaning away. It moves sideways to the Sun again. The weather starts to change.
The slanted light gets a little stronger. The air warms up a bit. We call this fresh time Spring.
Spring days get longer again. The snow begins to melt away. The dirt feels soft and wet.
New plants poke out of the ground. Green buds appear on bare branches. The world wakes up.
Baby animals are born. Birds build nests in the trees. The Earth feels alive again.
The journey is almost complete. Earth is nearing the start of its circle. The orbit brings it back around.
Soon, the North will lean fully toward the Sun again. The direct light will return. Summer will come back.
This is why we have four seasons. The tilt never changes. But our spot around the Sun does.
The leaning ball walks the big circle. This makes the light change. The changing light makes the weather change.
If Earth stood up straight, we would have no seasons. Every day would feel exactly the same. The weather would freeze in place.
We need the tilt to mix things up. The tilt gives us snowy days and sunny beaches. It gives us a changing world.
Plants need this cycle to grow. Animals use the cycle to rest and wake. The seasons help life survive.
Every time you feel a cold breeze, think of the tilt. Every time you feel hot sun, think of the circle. We are always moving.
The Earth dances at a slant around the Sun. This tilted journey shares the light differently every month. That is why our world is always changing.
